How do I start a blog under a pen-name and maintain my anonymity. How do you then get regular readers?

I want to blog about issues I don’t want associating with my ‘work’ self. How do I choose a blog host that has a good anonymity record, in other words, I don’t want it to be easy for people to match up my IP address or access my personal details.
Also, having set the blog up, how do you encourage high volume visitors?
I’ve only used LJ before and I want to try something a bit different, but anonymity is the biggest issue for me. Would welcome suggestions of good free blog hosts.

Use www.blogger.com. You write/blog under a user name, not your real name. Creating a profile with photo and all that is optional. You have to advertise your site if you want people to go to it regularly. You can advertise it on free things MySpace, or related sites that would contain your link (that might not be free).

How do you reply to comments on your blogspot blog?

I have just gotten a blog on blogspot. People comment me and I was wondering how you comment back to them without e-mailing or going to their blog.

Simply go to your blog and choose the post you would like to comment on, then locate the link "x comments" at the bottom of the post, click on that, and in the pop-up window you can leave a comment.

What’s better for posting opinions and ideas: blog or facebook?

I’m a dad who doesn’t know a lot about the internet or computers but I’ve had some encouragement to start getting my ideas and opinions down in writing. It’s been suggested that I use facebook or start a blog or something but I’m not sure which to use. Any suggestions?

I’m glad that you’re getting your ideas out! Everyone needs to find a creative way of expressing themselves and I’m happy that you’re doing it in language. That being said, go with a blog, definitely. Facebook is a website used for conversational, short chats. A blog can be anything, including something similar to a Facebook, and it’s entirely your decision. It can be a place for you to have lots of friends or more like a serene public journal. You can edit your posts, put in just as many pictures, and even if you get a Facebook (they’re great for finding classmates), you can attach the link onto your blog so that you can have both.

Facebook is more for keeping in touch with friends- you can write something long, but generally, it’s short, more humorous messages.

I’d recommend getting a blog on either Blogspot or Word Press. With these, you can write as much as you want and you have absolute control over everything from the images that you put up to the way that your blog looks. Both of these are free and you can even make money off of them through advertising. Furthermore, you can have as many as you want and you set the tone. A blog is more of a writing venture whereas Facebook is more like a forum and, while you can write what you wish, it’s more for sharing brief quips, news, games, and pictures. A blog is calmer- not nearly the hectic number of people going in and out- and you can write whatever it is that you want. If you don’t want to be found, you won’t be.

Essentially, a blog is a writing venture used specifically for getting your ideas out in a thorough manner. Both Blogspot and Word Press have example blogs that you can use to get an idea of what you want your blog to look like and the general style of blogging.

I hope that this helps! Good luck and happy writing!
